Abstract:

Our study aimed to present the frequency of occurrence and characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains causing nosocomial infections in a Romanian university hospital, from January 2004 to December 2005. A total of 730 S. aureus strains were identified, methicillin-resistance was detected in 292 (39,86%) strains. The prevalence of MRSA differed according to clinical profile, specimens. There was an increasing tendency of isolation from patients treated in the intensive care unit. Most of the strains were multiresistant. There was no glycopeptid, nor linezolid resistant MRSA. According to our results, MRSA was endemic in our hospital and there is an urgent need to enhance infection control efforts.
